6 Tips for Eye Health in the Winter

The heady combination of winter time and a global pandemic has meant that many of us are spending much more time indoors. Our lead optometrist, Mai Monavar, shares 6 tips to help keep eyes healthy during the winter.

The biggest effect many of us are feeling is the amount of time we’re spending in front of a screen.  Don’t worry! There is no evidence suggesting that increased screen time damages our eyes, however it can be increasingly tiring to spend so much time in front of the screen or monitor.  To maximise your visual comfort, you may want to consider the following 6 tips:

Take a look outside

Positioning your screen near a window where possible to make it easy to give your eyes regular breaks by looking out of the window. Don't forget the 20-20-20 rule! The natural light is also uplifting and will also enable you to see detail more clearly.

Dry air? No thanks!

Invest in a humidifier - this will counteract the dry winter air, helping your eyes feel more comfortable, especially for long periods looking at a screen.

Keep your prescription updated

Ensure you have the most up to date spectacles or contact lenses if you need them. The wrong prescription (weather too strong or too weak) will put strain on your eyes, and could lead to tired, achy eyes, and even headaches.

Ordering your frames on Eyebou also guarantees that your prescription lenses with blue light protection can be added for free. Use the code 'FREELENS' at checkout.

Drink more water

Make sure you’re hydrated.  When we concentrate (e.g. looking at a screen or page for an extended time) we develop a reduced blinking rate, and our eyes dry out more quickly, so it’s important we have enough water in our bodies.

Sunnies aren't only for summer

Wear sunglasses.  The low winter sun can be very dazzling, particularly on a wet surface when driving, so protect yourself with ideally a polarising sunglass tint. UV rays are also present throughout the year and not only when the weather is hot.

Keep those eye drops handy

Moisturising eye drops can add a boost of hydration to your eyes, improving comfort and vision.  We recommend Vizulise Vizcellose 1% or hycosan extra drops, which are both preservative free and can be used with and without contact lenses.

Eyebou's vitamin lenses can also help keep eyes feeling refreshed. The pink solution is infused with vitamins B6, B12, and E, which help encourage the quality and quantity of tears.
